Creating Therapeutic Story Books is a model taught by Karla Burley MA, The Open Toy Box, and Suzanne McGladdery and is endorsed by Professor Richard Rose, Therapeutic Life Story Work International.
The model uses the child’s favourite character or a character they can identify with. A story is then tailored to the child and their history using the chosen character. The aim of the story is to provide the child with an understanding of the history surrounding their birth parents which resulted in the choices they made.
This model does not require direct work with the child. Carer’s are supported with sessions and they approve the story book before it is printed. The practitioner will also support the carer in preparing themselves for responses or questions asked by the child.
The child’s character can be anything! Dinosaurs to cars, Peppa Pig to Ironman, Postman Pat to Snoopy AND everything in-between!
